Focus
The internet lifestyle is advertised everywhere as allowing you to own and run your own business from the comfort of your own home. This is true but this can also bring on another problem.
For some people, being at home and not having someone looking over you can lead to many distractions taking away from the time you actually spend on your business. Whilst for many, the drive is there to make your business whatever the cost, sometimes; you can have those days where you are at a loss to what to do. Perhaps some of the things you are trying are not working, or you were expecting much better results than you actually achieved. This can be discouraging for anyone and the temptation can be there to not put in as much work the following day because you can start to allow your mind to start wondering and you start to self justify doing other things, or even to the point where you say ‘well I will put in twice as much tomorrow’ so today I just won’t do anything.
This isn’t uncommon, but it is an important time in your Internet Adventure, because it can then become a downward spiral, where tomorrow never comes and suddenly weeks have passed and you haven’t done anything that you needed to do in order to really move your business forwards.
As with anything, there are only so many hours that you can productively sit at your screen and do what is necessary to move your Internet business forwards. Depending on whether you are doing it full time or as a side line to see whether or not it really is something you can turn into a living, you have to remain focused, organized and dedicated.
As a suggestion, when you are working at home, is to break up your day into 40 minute – 1 hour solid sessions of dedicated profit making activities. When you first try this, you will find it very hard, as you will have e-mails coming in, or the phone will ring, or you need the bathroom, a drink or something. But you can put all these things off for an hour – honestly! After your 40 minutes or 1 hour, then give yourself 15-30 minutes break, go to the bathroom, make a drink or a snack, put the washing on and return any missed calls or e-mails. By doing this, you really focus on the business activities that you need to get done during a day and you’ll find that in actual fact you are probably more productive working from home that you are or were in an office environment where distractions are coming at you from every angle and it’s much harder to get away from. It takes self discipline and focus, but if you break up your day in a sensible manner, you will see just how much you can achieve and still have time to do all the other daily chores that don’t go away just because you decided to start an online business from home!
